7 Quick But Equally Impressive Facts About Steel You Might Not Know

With this in mind, we thought that we’d have a little fun and dig out 7 quick (but equally impressive) facts about our favourite product that you might not know. Here goes…

Fact No 1 – As both steel and iron expand when heated, the Eiffel Tower is susceptible to growth or shrinkage. As it stands the tower is roughly 300 metres tall (not counting the antenna), yet on a cold day it can be as much as 15 centimetres less. Just imagine being up the top on a changeable weather day!

Fact No 4 – 2000 years in the making. Steel has been around in one form or another since about 200 BC, but it wasn’t until the 1850’s when Englishman Henry Bessemer introduced a technique to mass produce steel. This method is still used to this day.

Fact No 5 – Stainless steel is 1000 times stronger than iron. Although they weigh about the same, when it comes to strength there’s no comparison. Stainless steel is up to 1000 times stronger than pure-grade iron.

Fact No 6 – Steel is the most recycled material in the world. What’s more it can be recycled over and over again without losing any of its properties.

Fact No 7 – 158,249 Eiffel Towers can be built with the amount of steel that’s produced each and every year. That’s 1,582.5 million tonnes of the stuff! China are by far the world’s biggest producers.
