Metal Finishing – What Are the Options?

Metal finishing is the last step when preparing a metal product for use and as such is a crucial part of any metal fabrication project. It makes a product more resistant to corrosion and provides a higher chemical or electrical tarnish resistance too. Furthermore, it makes a product look its best and adds additional strength. Typically, the finish of a product is often determined by how it will be used.

In this post, we’re going to give you a brief overview of the various types of metal finishing and what factors to consider when choosing a finish. So, let’s jump in and take a look.

Powder Coating

This is termed more of a decorative finish and is considered more durable than paint. Dry plastic powder is melted and applied to surfaces with a variety of different textures and colours. It’s more flexible than paint and is suited to products that move frequently.

Metal Plating

This is a manufacturing process that involves coating a layer of metal on to a product that’s made from a different type of metal. It can be done for aesthetics but, more importantly, it makes the product more resistant to corrosion and strengthens it.

Anodising

This type of metal finishing is often used to change the surface of an aluminium object into aluminium oxide. It’s done to make the product more resistant to corrosion, to reduce the impact of normal wear and tear, and make it stronger. It usually has a natural colour although dyes can be added for aesthetic appeal.

Galvanising

This refers to a metal product being coated with zinc to protect it. The process involves dipping the product into a molten bath of zinc to coat it. It’s best used on steel products and costs less than most of the other finishes although it has a longer life expectancy. The procedure is also far quicker, and the main benefit is that if one part of the product gets damaged, the rest of the area is still protected by the galvanised zinc.

Sand blasting

This involves spraying sand or some other abrasive material onto the product at high speed to make the surface smooth. This type of finish has the benefit in that it cleans and provides a surface finish in one operation which may save time and money. It can also be used to prepare the surface of a product before plating, painting, or powder coating.

Metal finishing – which type to choose?

Sorting through the various metal finish options can be confusing but it helps to consider the following factors before making your choice:

  • Which finish aligns best with how you’re intending the product to be used?
  • Is the finish method cost-effective for your project?
  • Does the length of the treatment time fit in with the speed you require for your project’s production?
  • Is the finishing technique suitable for the materials used in your project?
